Spells for Democracy

Since Russia invaded Ukraine, the world has tried every conceivable means to stop Putin. Sanctions, advanced weapons systems, diplomacy — all attempted, none successful. Over time, this has caused news coverage of the war to fade, while many people have begun to feel a growing frustration and resignation about whether they can affect the situation at all.

But there was one method that had been overlooked until now — one that Putin himself is said to fear: witchcraft and the occult. It's a force that's been trending on TikTok under #witchtok, where users throw themselves into affirmations, mantras, and spells. Could the supernatural become a weapon against Putin, where modern politics had fallen short?

Together with the NGO Ukrainian Witness — which documents war crimes and fights to preserve democracy in Ukraine — we created a digital campaign that gave people a chance to influence Putin's fate.
